Day 1 – starting Insulin

Obi waiting….

Today we are starting our Insulin journey…waiting to pack Obi up and take him to the Vet. The first day apparently will mean to take blood from Obi ever 2 hours to test his Glucose levels to be able to determine and get to an ideal Blood Glucose Curve. We are all very anxious and hope it will go well and we can stabilize him quickly.

Than we can focus on his kidneys and make sure his diet will help him with better results! His creatinine levels are a bit too high, and the serum urea is jumping around. Good news is the serum phosphate is normal. All new words we have to get our heads around and learn how to read them.

At the vets…..all went well and his Glucose levels were actually the lowest it has been at 10.1 mmol/L . And his weight seems to have stayed at 5.4 kg, which is great, as he lost about 0.5 kg in the last 3 weeks.

We now have to poke his ears every 2 hours for 12 hours today and possibly for about a week to establish his ‘curve’. He was started with a very low dose, hope we can stay with it.

Our kit to check his glucose levels and Micro syringes for his insulin in the morning. It was decided to go with Humulin 30/70, which is used by humans, and apparently works well for cats also. And the most important thing for us, as we live in Nairobi, Kenya, it will be easy to find!
